Project Overview

This European developer and manufacturer of technologically superior heating, hot water and climate control solutions, approached punker with the task of developing and delivering a new and optimized fan unit for an existing hall ventilation system within a timeframe of only three month. The punker solution included a switch from forward- to backward-curved fan wheels, a customized, laser-welded housing and supplying complete fan units that deliver a significant increase in energy efficiency and a substantial decrease in sound pressure.

    Our customer is one of the leading international companies for heating and indoor climate solutions. With its broad product range, they cover pellet boilers, heat pumps and solar systems and offer a comprehensive range of gas and oil condensing boilers as well as solutions for controlled domestic ventilation, in the field of indoor climate systems and heat recovery. The group of companies has 2,000 employees worldwide.

    CHALLENGE

    The client approached punker with this time-sensitive project in July 2018.

    For an existing hall ventilation system, a ventilation solution with a new operating point was sought, which was to be delivered in a quantity of 200 units within a fixed time window of only 3 months. In the existing system, two blowers with forward-curved fan wheels of the punker Fclassic series and housings manufactured by the customer were used. What was needed was a wheel solution with motor asynchronous speed for the required air performance while at the same time increasing energy efficiency. The general conditions also included the limited space available due to the existing plant design and the requirement that the manufacturing costs of the plant should not be negatively affected.

    SOLUTION

    The aerodynamical project requirements and the available constructive installation space were discussed together with the punker application engineers and a solution was developed on the basis of the large characteristic curve data base of the punker company. The required operating point could not be reached with the forward curved fan wheels used up to that point. punker’s application engineers developed an alternative solution based on backward curved wheels of the R63B2 series, taking into account the available installation space and the given motor asynchronous speeds, including a housing. The use of laser welding technology allows punker to provide the customer with complete blower units quickly and at no additional cost to the customer. The final analysis of the newly developed blower units on the chamber test stand in punker’s laboratory showed an increase in system efficiency of 26%, and a reduction in noise emission of 3 dB.
