8.1. EU Ecodesign Framework Directive

The EU Ecodesign Directive (Directive 2009/125/EC - ErP) establishes a framework for setting mandatory environmental requirements for energy-related products (ErPs) sold and put into service in all 27 EU member states, regardless of where the products are produced or manufactured.

With this framework directive, manufacturers are obliged from the outset to increase the energy efficiency of products as much as possible on the one hand, and to take into account many environmental aspects, such as material/water consumption, pollutant emissions, waste generation and recyclability, etc., on the other.

The scope of the Framework Directive currently covers more than 40 product groups, such as.

  • Fans, motors and circulating pumps;
  • Air conditioners and comfort fans;
  • Dishwashers, refrigerators, televisions and washing machines;
  • Lighting in the home;

The direct minimum environmental requirements for the individual product groups are specified individually in the respective implementing regulation at EU level in accordance with the committee procedure.

These implementing regulations require manufacturers, importers and suppliers to comply with the minimum standard for energy consumption of regulated products, but also to provide a declaration of conformity in the form of the CE mark and, in addition, technical documentation such as design calculations and test reports, which can then be verified by the national surveillance authority.
